Common Umrah Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Avoid common physical, logistical, and religious errors to protect the reward of your pilgrimage.
Mistake 1: Crossing the Meeqat on Planes Without Ihram
Many pilgrims traveling via Jeddah wait until landing at the airport to put on Ihram. This violates the Meeqat obligation because planes cross the boundary mid-flight. Always wear your Ihram garments at your departure lounge or home, and voice your intention 20–30 minutes before landing when the captain announces approaching the Meeqat.
Mistake 2: Physical Aggression at the Black Stone
Causing physical injury, shoving, or causing distress to fellow Muslims is strictly sinful (haram). In contrast, touching or kissing the Black Stone is a voluntary Sunnah. The Sunnah is fully fulfilled simply by raising your right hand toward the stone from afar and saying "Bismillahi Allahu Akbar".
Mistake 3: Cutting Only a Few Strands of Hair
Merely cutting two or three strands of hair does not satisfy the requirement of Taqsir in most classical legal schools. For Taqsir, hair must be shortened equally across the head, or the entire head shaved (Halq).
