How to Perform Umrah: Complete Step-by-Step Guide

A clear, spiritually grounded guide explaining the four pillars and essential obligations of Umrah.

The Sacred Pillars of Umrah

According to the consensus of Islamic scholars, Umrah comprises four fundamental pillars: entering Ihram with intention, performing Tawaf around the Kaaba, performing Sa'i between Safa and Marwah, and cutting or shaving the hair (Halq/Taqsir). Fulfilling these in proper sequence with sincere devotion completes the pilgrimage.

Pillar 1: Entering Ihram

Ihram is the spiritual threshold of your journey. Before reaching the boundary (Meeqat), perform a purifying bath (ghusl), put on your prescribed garments, make intention by saying "Labbayk Allahumma Umrah", and begin reciting the Talbiyah continuously.

Pillar 2: Performing Tawaf

Ensure you are in a state of wudu. Begin each circuit from the Black Stone line marked on the floor or by the green light on the wall. Complete 7 circuits counter-clockwise, keeping the Kaaba to your left. Once completed, perform 2 rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim and drink Zamzam water.

Pillar 3: The Sa'i of Safa and Marwah

Walk 7 laps between the hills of Safa and Marwah. Each trip between the two hills counts as one lap (Safa to Marwah is 1; Marwah to Safa is 2). The ritual concludes at Marwah on the 7th lap.

Pillar 4: Halq or Taqsir

Conclude your rituals by cutting your hair. For men, shaving the entire head (Halq) is superior and carries greater reward, though trimming equally from the entire head is permissible. Women trim the length of a fingertip from the end of their braid.
