Ihram Rules, Guidelines & Prohibitions
Everything you need to know about entering, maintaining, and observing the sacred state of Ihram.
Prescribed Attire for Men and Women
For men, Ihram consists of two seamless white cloths (an Izar wrapped around the waist and a Rida draped over the shoulders). Men must not wear stitched, form-fitting garments such as shirts, trousers, or underwear. Women wear regular modest, loose-fitting attire that covers everything except the face and hands.
Prohibited Acts While in Ihram
While in Ihram, the following are strictly forbidden: cutting hair or clipping nails, applying perfume to body or clothes, covering the head for men with form-fitting caps, covering the face for women with a niqab, engaging in marital intimacy or flirting, hunting animals, or engaging in arguments and abusive speech.
Understanding Violations (Fidyah / Dam)
If an Ihram prohibition is accidentally or forgetfully committed, there is no sin, but one should immediately cease the act upon remembering. If a prohibition is committed intentionally out of necessity (e.g. shaving hair due to severe head ailment), an expiation (fidyah) is required as outlined in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:196).
